Pulp, Ink & Hops Paper Show Invitation/Poster

An interactive mailer inspired by vintage monster movies

Client: AIGA Baltimore

This invitation was created for AIGA Baltimore’s annual paper show, Pulp, Ink & Hops, a celebration of print design, paper, and craft beer. The event was held at the Geppi Entertainment Museum, home to a vast collection of comic and pop culture history—making it the perfect setting for this year’s theme: vintage monster movies.

I designed the invitation as a fold-out mailer that transforms into a full-size poster, drawing direct inspiration from classic monster movie posters of the 1950s and ’60s. With bold typography, dramatic illustrations, and playful horror tropes, the design aimed to capture the nostalgic, campy energy of old-school film promotions while showcasing the tactile appeal of print.

Inspiration:

Movie poster for 'Creature from the Black Lagoon' featuring a giant amphibious creature holding a frightened woman and a man with underwater scenes at the bottom.
Movie poster for "Attack of the Crab Monsters" showing a giant crab with an open claw and a woman in green swimsuit hanging from a rope in front of it, with a group of scientists in the background.
Vintage movie poster for 'The Beast with 1,000,000 Eyes,' featuring a large, menacing green monster with multiple eyes, sharp teeth, and tentacle-like appendages attacking a surprised woman in a black outfit and pink jacket.

Design Goals:

  • Evoke the charm of retro monster flicks

  • Create a keepsake-worthy invitation that doubles as event promotion

  • Celebrate print design through physical interaction and format

  • Reflect the spirit of AIGA’s creative community

The final piece was both a functional mailer and a collectible poster, setting the tone for a lively, design-driven event and standing out in recipients’ mailboxes.
